DR MARTENS The classic Chukka boot from Dr Martens. Leather upper which has a 3 tie lace up front, raw seam detail on the rear and a pull loop with branding on it. This style also has the trademark yellow stitching and air cushioned sole Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began in the town of Seeshaupt, Germany (near Munich) in 1945, when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To facilitate walking during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air cushioned sole. By using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to an inventor friend and the rest as they say is history!

Shoe's arrived in good time, slight spirit type smell possibly adhesive used in the manufacture but not overpowering, well packaged. These shoes are not waterproof(apart from sole)and will allow water to penetrate the upper construction. The answer is to spray them with a waterproofing product, I used two coats of Punch instant protector and put the shoes under a running tap and the treatment dispelled the water. How they will stand up after a 20 minute heavy downpour of rain? I do not know.

It hasn't rained yet so I don't know how they will cope. They were a bit tight across the toes when I first put them on. And they do smell a bit. But once I'd put them on and started walking a bit they felt great. Maybe it was the heat from my feet.Love 'em.

I've now bought two pairs of these boots and in both cases have found that they have give off a noxious chemical smell - really headache inducing. I bought some other DM's recently and they were just fine - so I reckon it's not just my nostrils conking out. I guess there must be something wrong with this batch. Either that or it's some wierd design feature specific to the Jake. Saying that they really do look great. Shame they stink. Will be sending my latest pair back and am hoping for third time lucky.
